The Village That Has It All
La Cala de Mijas occupies a sweet spot on the Costa del Sol that few other places manage to achieve. It has the feel of a genuine village — a compact centre with its own church, a handful of streets lined with restaurants and shops, a weekly market and a community where people know each other by name. Yet it sits directly on the Mediterranean, with a beautiful sandy beach, a seafront boardwalk, and all the coastal amenities you could want. Add in one of the best golf resorts on the coast, a well-established British community, and property prices that remain below Marbella and Fuengirola, and you begin to understand why La Cala is one of the most popular choices for UK buyers on the Costa del Sol.
Located in the Mijas Costa municipality, roughly midway between Fuengirola (15 minutes east) and Marbella (25 minutes west), La Cala has excellent road connections via the AP-7 motorway and the coastal A-7. Malaga Airport is approximately 35 minutes away. Despite this accessibility, the village manages to feel like its own place rather than a suburb of anywhere else.

The western end of the beach, towards Riviera del Sol, tends to be less crowded. The central section near the village is busiest in July and August but remains manageable compared to the packed beaches of Fuengirola or Torremolinos. The boardwalk is popular with walkers, joggers and families throughout the year, and the beachfront restaurants make it a destination for evening dining.
Swimming conditions are generally good, though the beach can experience seaweed accumulation during certain wind conditions. Water temperature ranges from 15 degrees Celsius in winter to 24 degrees in August.
La Cala Golf Resort
One of La Cala's biggest draws is the La Cala Resort, a comprehensive golf, spa and leisure complex located in the hills behind the village. The resort features:
- Three 18-hole golf courses: Campo America, Campo Asia and Campo Europa, designed by Cabell Robinson. These are among the most scenic courses on the coast, winding through pine-covered hills with mountain and sea views.
- Golf academy: Extensive practice facilities and professional tuition
- La Cala Resort Hotel: A 4-star hotel with spa, restaurants and conference facilities
- Residential properties: Apartments and villas within the resort grounds, with golf course views and resort amenities
Green fees range from €60 to €120 per round depending on season and course. Annual membership packages offer significant savings for regular players. The resort is a significant employer in the area and its events and facilities contribute to the village's year-round vitality.
Restaurants and Amenities
For a village of its size, La Cala has a surprisingly good dining scene. The main street and the area around the church square host a mix of traditional Spanish tapas bars, international restaurants, and British-run establishments. Highlights include:
- Spanish tapas: Several excellent bars serving authentic Andalusian tapas and raciones, with a tapa and a beer costing €3-€5
- International dining: Italian, Indian, Thai and British restaurants catering to the diverse expat community
- Beach restaurants: Fresh fish and paella at the chiringuitos, with sardines cooked over open fires — a classic Costa del Sol experience
- Fine dining: A handful of upscale options have opened in recent years as the area has matured
Daily amenities are well-covered within the village: a Mercadona supermarket nearby, a pharmacy, medical centre, banks, hairdressers and the essential services for daily life. For larger shopping, the Centro Comercial La Cala and the nearby El Zoco commercial centre in Calahonda provide additional options. Fuengirola's full shopping and services are just 15 minutes away.
The British Community
La Cala has a well-established British community that strikes a balance between being supportive without being overwhelming. Unlike Fuengirola, where the British presence can dominate entire streets, La Cala maintains a more international and Spanish mix while still offering plenty of English-speaking company.
British-run businesses include estate agents, hairdressers, a few pubs and restaurants, and various service providers. Social networks include coffee mornings, walking groups, golf societies, and charity organisations. The village is large enough to find British company easily but small enough to integrate into the wider international and Spanish community.
For British buyers who want some English-speaking social support without living in a British bubble, La Cala is one of the best options on the coast.

Market Trends
La Cala's property market has performed strongly over the past five years, with average price increases of 25-35% since 2020. The area benefits from several positive trends:
- Limited new supply: Development land around La Cala is constrained by the hillside and existing urbanisations, restricting new construction and supporting prices
- Growing demand: Buyers priced out of Marbella are discovering La Cala as an alternative with similar coastal amenities at lower prices
- Improving infrastructure: Road upgrades, commercial development, and beach improvements continue to enhance the area
- Year-round appeal: The golf resort and established community ensure demand beyond the summer tourist season
For UK buyers seeking a village lifestyle with coastal access, golf on the doorstep, and property prices that have not yet reached Marbella levels, La Cala de Mijas represents one of the most balanced propositions on the Costa del Sol. It is the kind of place where you can walk to the beach in the morning, play golf in the afternoon, and have dinner in a village restaurant in the evening — all without getting in a car. That combination is increasingly rare and increasingly valuable.
